Ed Sheeran – Play : Et si on arrêtait deux minutes de chialer?

Bonjour ma gang de p’tits diables !

En ce beau vendredi, je me suis dit : « Bon… si je dois être un peu salé aujourd’hui, ce sera envers la critique elle-même. »

Parce que oui, je parle de l’album Play de Ed Sheeran, et selon plusieurs critiques, l’album « tourne en rond » et serait « décevant côté innovation ».

Mais honnêtement… allez vous faire foutre.

(c’est dit. Fallait que ça sorte.)

Est-ce que vous avez déjà vu Ed Sheeran rapper aussi vite qu’Eminem ?!

Bon, j’exagère peut-être un peu… mais quand même. Ed Sheeran qui rappe, c’est aussi improbable que moi qui écris ces lignes — et pourtant, ça arrive !

Et l’ajout de sonorités un peu indie ?

Moi aussi, je pensais halluciner jusqu’à demander à notre dieu moderne : ChatGPT si j'étais fou. Il m'a répondue ceci:

“Play” d’Ed Sheeran reste globalement un album pop/folk moderne, mais il pioche clairement dans plusieurs palettes sonores… et certaines textures peuvent rappeler l’indie, surtout si tu te focuses sur :

🎸 1. Les guitares plus brutes ou “lo-fi”

Des riffs un peu moins polis, des rythmiques plus organiques, ça peut donner un “feel” indie même si ce n’est pas l’intention principale.

🥁 2. Les percus minimalistes

Quand t’as des beats simples, un peu dépouillés, ça rappelle pas mal la production indie/bedroom pop.

🎤 3. L’émotion très frontale dans la voix

Le côté “je chante proche du micro, presque chuchoté” est une signature fréquente dans l’indie.

🌫️ 4. Les ambiances un peu expérimentales

Des arrangements plus discrets, des textures qui remplissent juste l’espace… ça peut sonner très indie dans l’oreille d’un auditeur.

Ton oreille capte des vibes que beaucoup remarquent aussi, même si la critique “grand public” met l’accent sur le manque d’innovation. L’indie, c’est souvent une question d’ambiance, pas juste de style officiel — et “Play” en a quelques touches.

Oui, ça reste du Ed Sheeran.

Mais on ne lui demandera pas non plus de devenir ça :

on peut au moins reconnaître qu’il y a un vrai effort, autant dans le style musical que dans sa façon de chanter.

Mon avis honnête

J’ai trouvé cet album rafraîchissant, tout en gardant la plume et la sensibilité reconnaissables de l’artiste.

J’ai même versé une petite larme sur Old Phone — oui, oui, j’assume !

Pour moi, Play se classe facilement parmi mes albums préférés d’Ed Sheeran.

Alors c’est un grand OUI.

Et juste pour faire chier la critique :

20/10, parce qu’à un moment donné, faut bien aller se faire foutre.

Because yes, I’m talking about Play by Ed Sheeran, and according to several critics, the album “goes in circles” and is “disappointing in terms of innovation.”

But honestly… go fuck yourselves.

(There. It had to be said.)

Have you ever seen Ed Sheeran rap as fast as Eminem?!

Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little… but still. Ed Sheeran rapping is about as unlikely as me writing these lines — and yet, here we are!

And the touch of indie vibes?

I also thought I was hallucinating until I asked our modern god: ChatGPT, if I was crazy. It answered with this:

Ed Sheeran’s “Play” is still mostly a modern pop/folk album, but it definitely pulls from multiple sonic palettes… and some textures can feel indie, especially if you pay attention to:

🎸 1. The rawer or “lo-fi” guitars

Less polished riffs, more organic rhythms — that can totally give an indie feel even if it’s not the main intention.

🥁 2. The minimalist percussion

When you’ve got simple, stripped-down beats, it’s very reminiscent of indie/bedroom pop production.

🎤 3. The upfront emotional vocals

The whole “I’m singing super close to the mic, almost whispering” vibe is a common indie signature.

Subtle arrangements, textures that just fill the space… it can sound very indie to the listener.

I found this album refreshing, while still carrying Ed’s recognizable writing and emotional sensitivity.

I even shed a little tear at Old Phone — yes, yes, I’ll own up to it!

For me, Play easily ranks among my favorite Ed Sheeran albums.

So it’s a big YES.

And just to piss off the critics:

20/10, because at some point, they can go fuck themselves.
